Sample Hydrograph of Gauged Daily Flows

Flow Duration Curve for Gauged
Daily Flows

Station Description
Trapezoidal critical-depth flume (overall
channel width: 10m). Ongoing gauging programme to verify rating (which
overestimates flows). Station originates in 1935; flume built in 1940 but no
standing-wave until invert raised in 1961. Capacities of U/s and D/s culverts
can influence flood flows. Bypassed during flood of Sept. 1968; peak estimated
at 24-34 cumecs. Highest gauging c0.7 Qmed. Very patchy flow record prior to
1983. Artificial influences have sig. impact on the flow regime - runoff
augmented by sewage effluent which has increased over time; groundwater
abstractions also. Topographic catchment slightly exceeds effective drainage
area.Catchment Description
A narrow
catchment; largely London Clay below Chalk headwaters. Suburban/urban land use
dominates throughout the catchment.Factors
Affecting Runoff
- Runoff influenced by groundwater
abstraction/recharge.
- Runoff increased by effluent returns.

For many stations monthly peak flows are also archived. When daily
flow data are not available monthly mean flows may be held on the National
River Flow Archive. See Data Holdings for further
information.
