For England and Wales the maps are based on the regional hydrological boundaries of the Environment Agency regions, and the Environment Agency Wales (these differ from the administrative boundaries). In Scotland, where the Scottish Environment Protection Agency adopted a national structure in April 2001, hydrological boundaries are used to delineate the geographical regions featured. The Rivers Agency map boundary corresponds to the national boundary in Northern Ireland; thus it does not represent a hydrologically defined region. The minority of gauging stations operated by other organisations are included in the relevent regional map. Gauging stations located in neighbouring regions (shown in grey) are also featured.
