Datasets held by the Rivers Data Centre

The LOIS Rivers Data Centre holds river based datasets for the LOIS community covering the LOIS study area of the Tweed catchment in the North down to the Yare in the South.

LOIS generated datasets

LOIS Core Chemistry data weekly samples

Weekly water samples were collected from 11 sites on rivers in Yorkshire, one site on the Trent and from 3 sites in the Tweed catchment. These samples were analysed for nearly 200 different water quality determinands and the results were loaded onto the database for September 1993 to March 1997.

LOIS Hydrolab data

Hydrolab loggers were used to obtain continuous data for dissolved oxygen, pH and water temperature. The data were loaded onto the database for the summer of 1995 to March 1997 for a selection of the 15 core sites.

LOIS Turbidity data

Loggers were used to record continuous data for both absorptiometric and nephelometric turbidity in the field. The data were loaded onto the database for the summer of 1995 to March 1997 for a selection of the 15 core sites.

Environment Agency

North East Region Yorkshire area

Water quality data for river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges

Water quality data for all river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges from 1986 - 1995 were loaded on to the database. There are data for approximately 300 different determinands, including, metals, nutrients and pesticides. The frequency of the data range from fortnightly through monthly to bi-monthly at smaller or less important sites.

Consents

Observed data on the volumes discharged from sewage and trade sites are scarce. In this situation, the best alternative for observed data are the amounts permitted under the consent conditions. All the consent details that were current at the time were loaded onto the database.

Observed flows for river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges

Mean Daily flows for all gauging stations from the National Water Archive were loaded onto the LOIS database. Fifteen minute flows were loaded for the nearest gauging stations to the LOIS core sites.

Abstractions

Abstraction licence details that were current at the time were loaded for all abstractions in the Yorkshire area.

Midlands Region

Water quality data for river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges

Water quality data for all river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges from 1986 - 1995 were loaded on to the database. There are data for approximately 300 different determinands, including, metals, nutrients and pesticides. The frequency of the data range from fortnightly through monthly to bi-monthly at smaller or less important sites.

Consents

All the consent details for sewage and trade discharges that were current at the time were loaded onto the database.

Observed flows river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges

Mean Daily flows for all gauging stations from the National Water Archive were loaded onto the LOIS database. Fifteen minute data from 1989 - 1993 were loaded for a few sites.

Abstractions

Abstraction licence details that were current at the time were loaded for all abstractions in the Severn Trent area.

North East Region Northumbria area

Water quality data for river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges

Water quality data for selected river monitoring sites and all sewage and trade discharges from 1986 - 1995 were loaded onto the database.

Abstractions

Abstraction licence details that were current at the time were held at the Data Centre as they were on paper.

Anglian Region

Water quality data for river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges

There were no water quality data available for the Anglian region.

Consents

There were no consent data available for the Anglian region.

Observed flows river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges

Mean Daily flows for all gauging stations from the National Water Archive were loaded onto the LOIS database.

Abstractions

There were no abstraction licence data available for the Anglian region.

Beach transect data

Beach transect data for the Lincolnshire, Wash and North Norfolk coastlines were held by the Rivers Data Centre.

Scottish Environment Protection Agency

East Region Tweed catchment

Water quality data for river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges

Water quality data for all river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges from 1986 - 1995 were loaded on to the database. There are data for approximately 300 different determinands, including, metals, nutrients and pesticides. The frequency of the data range from fortnightly through monthly to bi-monthly at smaller or less important sites.

Consents

Consent details for the larger sewage works that were current at the time were loaded onto the database.

Observed flows for river monitoring sites, sewage and trade discharges

Mean Daily flows for all gauging stations from the National Water Archive were loaded onto the LOIS database. 15 minute flows were loaded for the nearest gauging stations to the LOIS core sites.

Abstractions

SEPA did not issue abstraction licences.

1km and 25m Land Cover data

The Land Cover data is a digital dataset of Great Britain created from information obtained by the Landsat satellite. It was produced by a semi-automated classification of data from the satellite's Thematic Mapper sensor. There are 25 classes of land cover including the semi-natural, cultivated and urban landscapes, recorded on a 25 m metre grid, covering all of Great Britain. These data were held under licence at the Rivers Data Centre.

Met Office data

Meteorological data were loaded for a number of sites for use by LOIS researchers. The data are hourly values for each day. These data were held under licence at the Rivers Data Centre.

DEFRA

Small Area Statistics data

DEFRA supplied the LOIS community with the 1992 and 1997 Small Area Statistics datasets. They give hectarage of 87 different crop types and livestock numbers by Parish Group. The Data Centre held paper plots from a graphics package of how the parishes aggregate to Parish Groups and Agricultural Districts.

Edinburgh University

DEFRA Small Area Statistics Boundary data

The Small Area Statistics Boundary data were obtained from Edinburgh University and were derived from the 1991 Agricultural census. The data are in Arc Info Export format as a vector polygon coverage for England and Wales. Paper maps at 1:250 000 scale also exist of Parish Boundaries. These maps would need to be digitised to obtain Parish Group boundaries if required. These data were held under licence at the Rivers Data Centre.

CEH Wallingford

1:50 000 River network

The river data are a continuous centre-line network based on Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 mapping covering the entire UK. These data were loaded onto the LOIS database.

Digital Terrain Model (IHDTM)

This data was loaded onto the LOIS database. The IHDTM is a 50 m grid of ground elevations covering the UK. It has been designed for hydrological applications and has been constructed from both river and contour data.

Flood Studies Report maps

These data were loaded onto the LOIS database. They include information for:

  • Winter Rainfall Acceptance Potential
  • Effective Mean Soil Moisture Deficit
  • Standard Annual Average Rainfall
  • 2 day M5 rainfall
  • 2 day M5 rainfall as % of SAAR
  • 25 day M5 rainfall
  • 1 hour M5 expressed as a percentage of 2 day M25
  • Estimated Maximum 2 hour rainfall
  • Estimated Maximum 24 hour rainfall
