The Rivers Data Centre

The Rivers Data Centre was responsible for the assembly of chemical flux data both from within the LOIS Programme and from external suppliers. Datasets included:

  • water quality data,
  • water quantity data,
  • consent to discharge data,
  • abstraction licences,
  • biological data.

In addition to these, various other associated datasets were acquired including:

  • the river network,
  • the IH digital terrain model,
  • soil type data.

For a full listing, see LOIS Datasets.

The Rivers Data Centre used WIS, an Environmental Information System, to store and manage the data. It has a geographical user interface, and allows the user to record the history of any object, or feature, as it moves through space and time.

WIS's ability to handle such a wide range of data types lies in its conceptual data model, a three dimensional array of cells in the form of a cube whose axes represent objects (features), properties (attributes) and time or 'what', 'where' and 'when'.
